The paper will look into the current state of play around the issues of the green economy, how it came about , what it means, the various challenges it faces and the current success (or not) it has gained over the past years. “Green Economy” is being selected as this dissertation topic for various reasons and here, we’d highlight the few key ones. Firstly, this is because the proposed this is being placed as one of the main agenda items on the decennial event of Sustainable Development, the Rio 2012 Summit. However, it has a slight alternation from “Green Economy” to “Green Economy to Eradicate Poverty” to prioritize the importance by governments as well as civil society on what they want this concept to address.Secondly, the concept has gained traction among many of the Asian nations, specifically the ones in North and South East Asia with several countries’ government allocating funds from their budget to “go green”.Last but not least, one of the most important factors is that this concept is new. The idea behind this concept is being perceived as a “western” ideology trying to sell to the less affluent countries to limit their growth and retain their position in global dominance. There are also other schools of thought that firmly believes that this is the way to go to avoid environmental destruction of the planet. Hence, the definition of “Green Economy” is up for grabs at this moment with different countries interpreting in their own ways, and looking at ways to position themselves as the leader in this field. We would be taking a closer look though the perspective of East Asia, given its growing prominence economically on the world stage and more recently, its interest in environmental development.
